10 home renovation projects to repurpose unused space

Posted

Let’s face we’ve all at some point asked the question “have I outgrown my home?” With a little creativity and a highly experienced construction company, anything is possible, and if you’re sentimentally attached your home, you don’t have to leave it to acquire more space. In this blog we’ll be covering 10 examples of home renovation projects that transform wasted space into a new functional space for the entire family.

My mother always used to tell me “a home is what you make of it.” After raising a large family, it’s hard to imagine moving into a new home and leaving behind the sentimental family memories that can’t be taken with us. But yes I was one of those people who, after several years of living in my home and acquiring new furniture and belongings, my family expanded. Suddenly I realized we’ve ‘outgrown’ our space. However, instead of moving into a bigger home I decided to draft up ideas to save our family home by making it more useful for us! If you identify with this, here are some excellent home renovation projects I ran across to repurpose wasted space.

Before we begin, let’s start with some of the basics…. Let’s first identify common points in a home that use wasted space. The most common space killers are under the stairs, walls built to contain a large structural beam or column, and awkward positioned catty corners. It doesn’t matter how large or small your family is, nor how young or old; this blog contains creative home renovation ideas to transform space for any homeowner. However, before you begin any home construction project even if you decided to give DIY a try, always consult with a professional construction company or general contractor. They will let you know what permits you need to begin your project as well as identify how safe your project is both to your home structurally as well as to yourself!

The Kitchen Under the Stairs

Example of home renovation that cleverly used waisted space under the stairs transformed into a functional kitchen

I thought this was a great example of how not only to repurpose a kitchen and make it more spacious, but to really make something yours. Counter space has been a big issue in many homes, so something to open space up and provide more counter space is perfect for any kitchen renovation project.

Builtin home office

office space that was used from wasted space under the stairs

Need a new home office? This custom builtin home office also utilizes wasted space from stairs and offers a whole new purpose to the space. This is a great home renovation project for any professional. I feel that this would work for both family homes and single unit homes.

Builtin Bookself

This is another great example of incorporating a creative concept to add more space to a home. Bookshelves can be big and clunky, taking up valuable space. The option of a builtin not only makes the space look more elegant, but also frees up much needed space.

Elegant Wet Bar

elegant man cave home renovation projects using wasted space from under stairs

I loved this idea for high end homes or maybe the sophisticated bachelor looking to spice up his man cave. This home renovation project uses space under the stairs to create a visual focus point for a wet bar. This was great utilization of space under the stairs.

Bedroom Nook Renovation

two repurposed nooks in a bedroom to make a more functional room

I felt this was a perfect home renovation project for our teenagers or young adults in college. Studies have shown that having a well organized space they can do homework in as well as provide a relaxing place to escape anxiety helps improve test scores.

The Living Room bookshelf

entire wall encompassed with a bookshelf

A big reason we start getting the “outgrown” home itch is due in large to the smaller things we collect throughout the years. I love the idea of completely encompassing a room with a shelving system to not only display books, but also pictures and collectables.

The Dog House Project

For our dog lovers out there, here is a great renovation project for you and your best friend! I love the window also placed for the dog to enjoy his private view. This is a great project idea for under stairs space transformation.

The Complete Wet Bar

This was a great project idea for households who love to entertain! I love that the space addition didn’t just contain the under stairs portion, but was also built out to make this an unforgettable focal center point of the home.

Project Bunkbed

home renovation project involving bunkbeds for large families

If you have a particularly large family, this is a great way to conserve space with a multi bunkbed system. Using custom built bunkbeds eliminates the clunky bunkbed frames you’d purchase at a furniture store allowing for more space for the family.

The Wine Enthusiast

Here is a great home renovation project for our wine enthusiast. This home owner used the wasted space from under the stairs to transform into a large, temperature and humidity controlled wine cabinet.
